you can tell it's been a long week when you fall asleep going home on the train and wake up thinking you're on your way to class, unsure just exactly which direction the train is heading in cause you're in a tunnel, and you try to blink away the sleepiness with that puzzled look on your face staring off blankly at the space in front of you while the guy sitting opposite you on the other side of the train wonders why you're staring at him or whatever.. but anyway, I'm just tired.. but still took a nice two hour leave at Bobst in between classes, nestled in my favorite spot on the 8th floor with Ogai, Soseki, Lu Xun, and all them familiar EAS buddies of mine.. staring out the window, down the street, at the sky, the occasional passerby, trucks, cars, birds, and just about anything that came into my field of vision.. course.. I'd probably be doing my writing in the park instead had the weather been warmer but oh well.. here's my latest go at linked poetry:

•t‚«‡‚¢‚È‚ª‚ç@@@@@tsukiainagara

actually took my time to write one that fits the classical tanka defintion, got onji count and nature element going, single verse, etc..

dream 022403: david hasselhoff dances and sings, throwing white and red rose petals about.. as kitt (you know, the talking car from knight rider) drives itself off a cliff into the ocean.. don't ask.

damn.. think I'm churning this stuff out bit too fast.. but here's a nice one I like to consecrate this little blog of mine and all that I've written so far and what not.. this one actually passes the actual 'japanese' syllabery requirement for haiku, too bad it lacks that nature content though, but oh well.. and now "on nonsense"

don't ask me if it makes sense..

so thanks to google I've finally figured out what genre of poetry my scribblings belong to.. apparently there's a more specialized terming called the jisei (Ž«¢) for poems that share themes common to mine, literally meaning ones of resignation / farewell.. and as to how popular they are in japan, no idea.. but you won't be finding any books on them in Bobst anytime soon for sure.. but then again never was one for mainstream anyway..

latest piece of subway inspiration:

so I missed my train stop today jotting down ideas for my next pseudo-tanka/haiku, but no matter, the idea was worth it.. spent my six-hour gap between classes today flipping through books of japanese poetry at Bobst library.. nothing beats that old book smell hanging out in between stacks of 50 year old books or whatever.. was kinda disappointed however in finding what I wrote probably wouldn't be counted as 'real' tanka or haiku by your normal japanese critic, but then again who ever said I was normal.. guess it's more like free-meter tanka/haiku or free-verse poetry what I write.. either way as long as it floats my boat, could care less.. and here's a peek at my latest ongoing inspiration..

and so goes by another wasted weekend which I'm sure I'm going to end up regretting come tuesday once classes start since tomorrow's an off day being President's day and all which no one really celebrates or gives a shit about anymore but since it's a day off I'm not going to complain about it so long as I get to waste another day tomorrow doing absolutely nothing and push my work even further back towards the weening hours of early tuesday morning which of course means I'll get absolutely no sleep at all that day and go to class on three cups of coffee's worth of caffeine so buzzed that I won't even be able to concentrate or pay attention there since I'll be too busy thinking about how badly I need to go to the restroom and relieve myself before my bladder bursts or something which would just lead to further embarassment for me but it's not like it's something I'm not used to seeing how I'm pretty much making a fool of myself each week in japanese class in front of *!&#*$@-sensei and those two native speakers who have absolutely no reason taking the class in the first place other than for the easy A since they already know the language and of course there's also *#&$(@-san the wanna-be japanese but won't ever be since he's too much of a geek and all who willl of course undoubtedly try to start another intellectual conversation with me trying to show off his limited knowledge of all things japanese being a sinophile discussing the finer points of samurai and bushido and what not while I just stand there and listen and nod my hid with the occasional "uh huh" to maintain the illusion that I'm still paying attention to him while my mind wanders off to lala land like I usually do fantasizing about this and that thinking up even more impossible scenarios where I die the hero or martyr's death which of course will never happen in this lifetime of mine but it's my fantasy so I'll do whatever I fucking want to in it from becoming the next great translator of japanese literature on the same level of donald keene and arthur waley and all those other sinophilistic overpaid ivy-league snobs with *#&$(@-san type personalities to being the geek who makes the Matrix movie into reality where of course I become the great Neo and save humanity being able to leap tall buildings in a single bound kicking van-damne however you spell his name and all those other wanna-be martial artists' asses until someone wakes me up flinging me back to the awful reality where my life totally sucks and has no meaning whatsoever... damn.. been thinking too much again, oh well, now where's that bottle of orange brandy I had lying around..

this one's my personal favorite.. probably nothing more than ƒmƒ“ƒZƒ“ƒX for those that actually understand it (oh wait, that's a contradiction).. either that or I'm way better at this poetry stuff than I thought I was (that's assuming this isn't your ordinary run-of-the-mill mindless dribble), but either way.. dunno.. maybe I should translate some of these into english or at least romanize them.. but that'd just cause me further embarassment or lead to a possible permanent residency in the local nuthouse now wouldn't it? then again I could always argue that the meaning would be lost in translation.. it's like shakespeare in japanese.. u‚¢‚é‚©‚¢‚È‚¢‚©A‚»‚ê‚ÍŽ¿–₾v literally "to be or not to be, that is the question.." yeah, sounds dumb as hell in translation doesn't it? oh wait, you don't know japanese now do you? that's ok.. I'm not even sure if I'm making any sense anymore.. rest assured though.. i am quite sane.. I think.. hrm.. dunno

hrm.. can actually post in japanese on this thing.. and so begins the repetitive task of recording my life, as seen through the eyes of one J. Eng (that being ƒGƒ“ƒO for those of us that know better), and hrm.. dunno what else to say.. oh well.. back to composing haiku and tanka.. hobby which I recently picked up, don't even know if I'm counting my syllables right.. if Œ“D can write mindless dribble in his “k‘R‘ then why the hell can't I? then again what I write probably makes no sense at all in japanese, but it's not like anyone that actually cares or understands the language would be reading it, dunno..
